Author: Just Simply Write
Have you read a story?
You knew was first rate
Then your teacher asked you
To list the character’s traits!
When you read a story
I will not tell a lie
Read your story carefully
I need to tell you why!
Authors can be tricky
Authors may not state
Authors will not tell you
All the character’s traits!
When authors write a story
They may not be direct
Use the author’s story clues
If traits are hard to detect!
Also in some stories
Traits are easy to find
Authors make it simple
I thank them every time!
Now it’s time to teach you
About the character traits
Keep this poem near you
I think that would be great!
Characters are described
By personality and physical traits
When you try to list them
Make sure you separate!
First comes physical
That's how a character looks
Characters move and speak
In many favorite books!
Characters can be slender
And tall with rosy cheeks
Characters can have muscles
But may be very weak!
Characters can move slowly
Like walk and crawl and bend
Characters have loud voices
To seek attention!
Characters have red hair
Or black with long thick curls
Characters can wear pants
With green and purple swirls!
Characters can be young
And old with silly smiles
Characters show off glasses
Who wear them for a while!
Last comes personality
That's how a character acts
They'll have these traits forever
I'm teaching you a fact!
Characters can be clever
Courageous and lazy too
Characters can be happy
I think this sounds like you!!
Characters can be quiet
Patient and curious
Characters can be friendly
Helpful and glorious!
When you choose a story
Read it to the end
If you forget what traits are
Read this poem again!
