Experienced and new
I dedicate this poem
To all of you!
I think it's time
For me to write
About our profession
So hold on tight!
First we do
The best we can
With the time we have
There are so many demands!
Next I know
Without a fuss
That our teaching profession
Is important to us!
It's so important
That we create
Our future leaders
There's no debate!
There are many students
We have to teach
There are many needs
We have to reach!
We work so hard
Day and night
Our daily schedule
Has no end in sight!
When in class
Not a moment is free
Because we have many
Responsibilities!
Let me continue
And mention the meetings
The time we spend there
Can be so defeating!
Don't you think
And I will assume
The extra time spent
Should be in the classroom?
How about the committees
And the duties too?
There's not enough time
For me and you!
Then curriculums change
It's so abrupt
Year after year
It's hard to keep up!
With all these changes
It takes a toll
On many teachers
Fulfilling their roles!
All I want
And all I have to say
Is… JUST LET US TEACH
During the school day!
As you read on
I want to reveal
Some of the problems
That need to heal!
And please understand
I'm not complaining
I'm sharing concerns
By simply explaining!
Has anyone thought
When teachers are hired
After a few years
They're extremely tired?
Has anyone thought
The size of the class
Does make a difference
Between fail and pass?
Has anyone thought
About low test scores?
Are the real solutions
Being ignored?
Has anyone thought
What we need?
When overlooked
It's hard to succeed!
Whoever is listening
Let me be clear
We have these challenges
Year after year!
To all the leaders
There are problems to solve
Let's help our teachers
So stay involved!
To all the leaders
We need your support
Our time together
Can be very short!
To all the leaders
Hear our words
Don't you know
We want to be heard?
Once you were
Wearing our shoes
Didn't you teach
In the classroom too?
To my teacher friends
There is nothing greater
When a student visits
Many years later!
A student says,
"I have a speech.
Thanks to you
I'm going to teach!"
I want to thank you
For the years you taught
For the lives you've touched
And the battles you fought!
