Author: Just Simply Write
A wonderful day for writing
You want to do your best
So time to choose a topic
And begin this writing quest!
Grab your favorite pencil
Grab your writing tools
Grab your writing journal
You keep when you're in school!
Find your dictionary
And new thesaurus too
Read my writing charts
I created just for you!
Let's begin your writing
Wish you the best of luck
You try to think of ideas
But realize you are stuck!
You think and think some more
There's nothing in your head
So close your writing journal
And listen to me instead!
First I have to tell you
That's really a delight
Watch your teacher closely
Her modeling is out of sight!
If you pay attention
You'll become a whiz
Teachers need to model
They know how important it is!
Now it's time for me
To teach you strategies
Whenever you are writing
Use them definitely!
Create an interest list
That's strategy number one
Whatever you enjoy
Record until you're done!
If you're having trouble
It's time that I assist
So read the following verse
To help you with your list!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS FUNNY
AND WHAT DO YOU REALLY LOVE?
WHAT DO YOU FIND EXCITING
AND WHAT ARE YOU PROUD OF?
When your list is done
Then it's time to choose
An interest of your liking
Pick one that you will use!
Strategy number two
Will help you organize
If you're having trouble
Begin to visualize!
Creating mental pictures
Tells stories for you and me
When you use this strategy
Ideas flow easily!
Now let's draw the pictures
You created in your head
Label every detail
Listen to what I said!
After labeling every picture
This is what to do
Turn labels into sentences
You need to follow through!
Another writing strategy
That will help you certainly
Is brainstorming ideas
That's strategy number three!
Many graphic organizers
Like diagrams, webs, and charts
Will help you organize
Right from the very start!
Whatever comes to mind
Record it if you can
This strategy is important
In this writing plan!
Another writing strategy
Will Show… not just tell
Showing is the details
Your readers like as well!
Details are the answers
To questions readers think
Details are specific
And a story's missing link!
Now's the time to talk
About strategy number five
Sequencing your story
Will make it come alive!
When you write a story
There are special words to use
Transitions help you order
I hope you don't refuse!
Transitions are words and phrases
Like After and In the end
Minutes later and Suddenly
However and Just then!
Strategy number six
Will help with writer's block
Writers sometimes struggle
I know that is a shock!
Let me try to help you
So reread your story again
You'll think of more ideas
If you read from beginning to end!
Check your organizer
To see if you have missed
Thoughts or ideas you brainstormed
This you can't dismiss!
Sometimes writers ask
Another writer or friend
To share a few ideas
To help them write again!
The strategies in this poem
I think are very clear
Writing will come easy
If you practice throughout the year!
Now I want to end
This poem I wrote for you
Next poem I will write
Is Writing Strategies 2!
